Nike Zoom Hyperdunk - Kobe Bryant Away PE

Nike Zoom Hyperdunk Kobe Bryant Away PE - Box

Kobe Bryant’s Player Exclusive (PE) model of the Nike Zoom Hyperdunk, the world’s lightest and strongest basketball shoe, released in extremely limited quantities late May without much notice or info. That’s right, Nike produced 48 pairs (24 home models and 24 away models) of the highly sought after Hyperdunks and made them available to only two accounts in the world! On May 23, 2008, House of Hoops presented by Foot Locker (Harlem, NY) released 24 total pairs (12 of each model) of the Nike Zoom Hyperdunk Kobe Bryant PE and sold out immediately. The following day, May 24, 2008, KB24.com (Kobe Bryant’s official web site) also released 24 total pairs (again, 12 of each model) and sold out within one minute. Each pair is limited to 24 and comes encased in a special collector’s box with plexi-glass cover. Laser-engraved on the plexi-glass are the shoe’s specs and special numbering “1/24.” “PROMO SAMPLE20080226″ is printed on the shoe’s tag. It is advertised to be the world’s lightest basketball shoe. The average basketball shoe weighs in at 16.0 ounces whereas the Hyperdunks are only 13.1 ounces.

The Hyperdunk, constructed with Nike’s “Fly Wire” technology, uses wires encased in the skim to harness the body of the shoe, eliminating weight above the sole. The sole is constructed with Lunar Foam, a material developed by NASA that gives the shoe a great feel with minimal weight. The Hyperdunk is also constructed with Vectran fiber, which is five times stronger than steel so it never loses it strength. With a breathable mesh tongue and a protective heel cup, safety and comfort is assured during long flights. Quite simply, the revolutionary Hyperdunk delivers all the support a baller needs on the court with the least amount of weight. The Hyperdunk represents the future, and the future is now.

Nike has done an excellent job promoting these Hyperdunks using viral marketing tactics. If you recall recently, Nike “leaked” a video where Kobe Bryant was filmed jumping over a speeding Aston Martin in his black Hyperdunks (away model). This immediately created a buzz throughout the media and internet sneaker communities. Several weeks later, another video was “leaked” on the internet…this time showing Kobe Bryant jumping over a pool of snakes to dunk a basketball with some help from the cast and crew of “Jackass.”

As a result of the leaked videos, awareness and demand for these Hyperdunks skyrocketed. Soon after these limited edition Hyperdunk Kobe Bryant Player Exclusives released, they immediately started showing up on eBay.com. The first waves of Hyperdunk auctions have ended and they are drying up on the secondary market as shoe collectors (not resellers) are putting their Hyperdunks away in the private collections. Demand remains high but the supply is just not there. This would explain the premium prices collectors are paying for a pair of Hyperdunks. The highest recorded sale to date is upwards of $4,000, and rising!

I was able to secure a pair for The Kobe Collection from KB24.com’s 24 Store. Here are some exclusive photos of the Nike Zoom Hyperdunk Kobe Bryant Player Exclusive Away model.

Nike Zoom Kobe III - Lower Merion “Aces”

Nike Zoom Kobe III Lower Merion “Aces”

Without a doubt, the most desired Nike Zoom Kobe III colorway are the Lower Merion “Aces.” The Aces first appeared on the scene back in March when Nike Basketball added it to their Inside.NikeBasketball.com web site under “Collection Extras.”

“To honor the evolving legacy of Kobe, Nike has created the Zoom Kobe III personalized in his high school colors. The lightweight shoe has a carbon-fiber spring plate designed to keep the ace in flight longer, and its breathable mesh fabric with webbed design helps keep his feet cool. The Zoom Kobe III is the shoe for the player who realizes the present is just the result of the hard work in the past.”

The word immediately started to spread throughout the sneaker community that this colorway even existed. Many Kobeheads and Sneakerheads demanded that Nike produce this colorway for general release. They soon came to find out the Aces were in fact going to be released, but as an Asia-exclusive. A Kobe signature shoe in his high school colors to be released only in Asia? This didn’t make any sense. Fans of the shoe living in the U.S. were not happy with Nike.

The Aces quietly released in Asia in early May and started to pop up on eBay. Kobeheads and Sneakerheads who had to have the shoe shelled out between $150-$200 plus another $30 for shipping to be able to own a pair. As more and more personal photos of the Aces were posted on sneaker forums, the shoe started to grow on Sneakerheads who weren’t previously interested in them. However, the only way they could purchase a pair was by paying reseller prices (steady at $150) from Asian ebay sellers, which some Sneakerheads refuse to do.

Word is that House of Hoops by Foot Locker (Harlem, NY) will be carrying the Nike Zoom Kobe III Lower Merion “Aces” at some point, making it the only retail location in the U.S. to carry this shoe.

My Day In Munich In ‘95 With Olajuwon (Oh, And Ewing)

Congratulations to Hakeem Olajuwon for being named to the Class of 2008 for enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame yesterday.

This reminds me of this one time in the summer of 1995 when I escorted Hakeem around a trade show in Munich, Germany. It was the I.S.P.O. Show, the annual mega-fair for sports equipment and fashion suppliers.

At the time, Hakeem was working for the 2-time N.B.A. Champion Houston Rockets. I was working for N.B.A. Properties in a job with the title Director of International Licensing.

To leverage its popularity in Europe, the league was an annual exhibitor at I.S.P.O. They would meet and discuss plans with international licensees like Starter, Champion, and Spalding, all of whom were also there.

In 1995, N.B.A. International decided to hire Hakeem as its spokesperson.

Since I am fluent in German, my role that day was to help accompany Hakeem around the show as he visited various licensees before stopping at the N.B.A. booth for interviews.

I knew I would be doing this, even before my arrival in Munich. The league planned everything. But on the way to Europe, my non-stop flight was canceled and I was re-routed through Copenhagen Airport. I was waiting in line for something alongside 2 men that I took to be Nigerians. So I asked them how to speak “Nigerian” which is really Yoruba, which is Hakeem’s native language.

The most important thing you can say to a Nigerian, they told me, is a very simple phrase.

“Báwo ni!”

It means, in effect, “Wassssuuuup?!” or, more accurately, “How are you?”

In Africa, greetings are big. Big as in important, and big as in the more heartfelt and strong it is, the greater the lasting impression.

So when I first saw Hakeem, from a distance, I shouted “Báwo ni!” with a big smile. When I got within range, instead of shaking hands we did one of those man-hugs, the modified handshake embrace usually reserved for teammates, country-mates, or close friends. We hit it off right away.

My erstwhile Nigerian tutors in Copenhagen predicted this would happen.

As we walked around the exhibit halls, we chatted about this and that, and Hakeem expressed an interest in visiting with his N.B.A. colleague Patrick Ewing. Ewing was in a nearby hall pushing his own line of namesake brand sneakers.

When we got there, the two star centers were cordial, respectful, and friendly with one another, despite their heated career-long on-court rivalry.

How does all of this fit in?

Well, for one thing I note that every single N.B.A. player that met me that day in Germany was eventually enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame!

I also note that Hakeem’s agent at the time, who I met later at dinner in a fancy Munich restaurant called Der Käfer, was Ralph Green, who eventually became the head of Nike Basketball.

Mainly though, I note the importance of choosing to take advantage of a moment, to make the effort, to single out a phrase in another man’s language, as a genuine gesture, and how far that can go.

What if we all tried that more often, in whatever language? Or in our own language with our own people sometimes?

“Báwo ni!”

Or just, “How are you?”

Try it some time. Make history now.
